NEED:
In December 2025, a basket weaving training program commenced for vulnerable women at the Sihhmui Refugee Camp in Aizawl District, Mizoram, with support from a dedicated woman from the Kuki community who relocated from Churachandpur and stayed at the camp.
The initiative seeks to address economic needs through the production of plastic baskets, utilizing materials currently sourced from Dimapur. Efforts are ongoing to find a nearer source for the next procurement. There is a definite need of such baskets in the community, and while the market may be challenging initially, there is optimism regarding the sale of these products and the women are committed to refining their skills. The initial training spanned seven days, with individual practice starting thereafter.
A proposal has been developed for funding the project, totaling Rs. 34,400, which covers materials, trainer expenses, and food. The breakdown includes: Weaving roll x 7 @2000 = Rs. 14,000; Plastic handle roll x 4 @ 1200 = Rs. 4800; Scissors x 5 @ 500 = Rs. 2500; Trainer’s travel x 2 @2000 = Rs. 4000; Trainer’s honorarium x 7 days @ 500 = Rs. 3500; Food during training 7x2=14 @ 300 = Rs. 4200; Refreshments for 7 days @200 per day = Rs. 1400.
This venture represents a promising start towards sustainable livelihoods for the women involved and aims to empower them to support their families live a life of dignity.
