Insights from the depths of a High-tech city: Challenges of Single Mothers

NEED:

There are infrequent instances where TU distributes ration kits to 3-4 families for 2-3 consecutive months. TU's rations cater to 5-10 individuals in these households. TU is seeking alternatives for these families to manage independently without regular monthly support. But may be a need for this provision in the coming months until these women can stand on their own. It is a minor gesture from The Untouchables, but for these families, it alleviates a primary concern: “Where will our next meal come from?”

The entire process, from collection to distribution, is coordinated between the ‘seller’ (NICE – a supermarket that offers special discounts on goods and food kits) and the ‘buyer’ (The Untouchables) to deliver to these families in need at their modest homes.

These families are:

Chandbi and Ruksana are TU’s regular recipients. Chandbi Amma is a senior woman with no family members and resides in the basement of a building with her friend Ruksana, who works in the same place. Ruksana and her three children occupy a single-room space. Chandbi Amma, takes up odd jobs and also, waits by the Masjid Gate for daily alms.

Ganesh & Madakeri’s mother-led family, living in a tent under a bridge, continues to anticipate our monthly visit.  

Mallamma’s case was highlighted to TU during her pregnancy with her third child. With no permanent place to live and working hard by doing odd jobs daily, Mallamma not just provides for her three children but also supports her mother-in-law and sister-in-law in their village home through these rations. Despite the desperate situation that they are in, Mallamma’s children bring great delight by their joyfulness when TU visits them.
